Waste Management

Waste Management Coordinator

About Us:
The Waste Management Unit is committed to protecting the land, water, and air for present and future generations. Guided by Anishinaabe values of stewardship and modern environmental best practices, we manage the community’s solid waste system in a way that balances sustainability, efficiency, and respect for Mother Earth. Our Unit provides essential services that keep our community clean, safe, and healthy while also advancing long-term solutions such as waste diversion, landfill management, and environmental conservation.

What We Do:
We provide a comprehensive waste management system that covers:

  • Curb side waste collection for households and seasonal cottages.
  • Recycling and diversion programs to reduce landfill waste.
  • Hazardous waste and special waste handling (e.g., batteries, electronics, tires).
  • Landfill and transfer station operations.
  • Community education and awareness campaigns to encourage proper sorting, waste reduction, and reuse.
  • We also work closely with local, regional, and provincial partners to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and to prepare the community to transition from the Ontario’s Blue Box Program to the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) under the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA).

Waste Collection
Our department provides scheduled collection for households and cottages through Waste Management Canada by managing the contract signed for these services:

  • Household Garbage: Collected weekly.
  • Recyclables (Blue Box): Collected bi-weekly.
  • Seasonal Cottage Collection
  • Bulky Item Days: Announced seasonally for large household items (e.g., furniture, mattresses).

Collection Tips:

  • Place bins out by 7:00AM.
  • Ensure recyclables are clean and sorted properly.
  • Hazardous materials should not be placed in garbage or recycling bins.

Environmental Conservation
We believe in the principle of “taking care of the land so it can take care of us.” Our initiatives include:

  • Promoting the Circular Economy (Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Refurbish, Remanufacture, Repurpose, Recycle).
  • Supporting community clean-up days to reduce litter and build awareness.
  • Exploring composting opportunities for long-term sustainability treatment of organics.

Articles and Resources
We publish monthly waste management articles and newsletters to keep members informed. Topics include:

  • How to Sort Waste Properly
  • The Circular Economy
  • Recycling Myths and Facts
  • The Economic Value of Waste
  • Updates on Saugeen’s Landfill Decommissioning Project.
  • Community members will also find links to provincial waste programs, educational posters, and videos.

Landfill Management
Plans are underway to decommission the current dumpsite and establish a Waste Transfer Station and Recycling Hub at the landfill location. This will become a central hub for:

  • Garbage drop-off
  • Recycling services
  • Hazardous waste collection days
  • Special disposal site for electronics, batteries, and bulbs

This transformation represents a shift toward a 360-Degree Waste Management System ensuring all waste streams are responsibly managed.

Waste Diversion Programs

Recycling:
We participate in Ontario’s recycling programs for paper, plastics, glass, and metals. By 2027, our Blue Box program will fully transition under RPRA.

Hazardous Waste:
We provide safe drop-off options for:

  • Batteries
  • Electronics
  • Paints and chemicals
  • Tires and propane tanks

Composting (Future Initiative): We are exploring community composting to reduce food waste and create natural fertilizer.

Garbage:
General waste is collected weekly and directed to appropriate disposal facilities in line with environmental standards.
