Hazardous Materials Collection

Hazardous Materials Collection Information

The Road and Works Department is pleased to announce the launch of a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program designed to help community members safely dispose of harmful materials such as paint, waste oil, batteries, propane tanks, household cleaners, fertilizers, and other hazardous products.

This program aims to protect our land, water, and people by ensuring these materials are collected, stored, and disposed of safely rather than being placed in regular garbage or dumped on the land.

Residents are encouraged to bring their household hazardous materials to the Saugeen Landfill Site on designated drop-off days each week.

This ensures that all hazardous materials are handled responsibly and do not pose a risk to our environment or community health. To help make this program safe and effective, please read and follow the guidelines below for preparing and dropping off your hazardous materials. Together, we can keep Saugeen First Nation clean, safe, and environmentally responsible.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Drop-Off Instructions

Check your home, garage, and shed for hazardous materials such as:

  • Paint, stains, and varnishes
  • Motor oil, oil filters, and antifreeze
  • Cleaning products, bleach, or drain openers
  • Aerosol sprays, air fresheners, and polishes
  • Batteries (household or car)
  • Pesticides, fertilizers, or pool chemicals
  • Propane tanks, camping fuel, or fire extinguishers
  • Fluorescent bulbs and mercury thermometers
  • Always keep hazardous materials in their original containers with labels intact.

  • If the container is damaged or leaking, place it inside a larger container or sealed plastic bag for safety.

  • Do not mix different products together. This can cause dangerous chemical reactions.

  • Make sure lids are tightly closed.
  • Place liquids in sturdy boxes or bins to prevent tipping or spills.
  • For paint cans, ensure lids are secured; if dried out, place them in the garbage instead.
  • For propane tanks or fuel canisters, make sure the valve is closed and never puncture or crush them.
  • Place items upright in your trunk or truck bed. Avoid overloading or stacking.
  • Keep products away from children, pets, and food.
  • Drive carefully to the landfill and avoid leaving materials unattended. Never drop off materials at the entrance of the landfill.

All materials must be dropped off at the designated Household Hazardous Waste Area located at the Saugeen Landfill Site.

  • Drop-off Dates/Times: see point 8 below
  • Designated Area: Look for signs marked “Hazardous Waste Drop-Off” when you enter the landfill.
  • A landfill attendant will direct you to the correct area to drop off your materials.

Please do not bring the following items:

  • Explosives, ammunition, or flares
  • Medical sharps or infectious waste
  • Empty paint or aerosol cans (these go in your Blue Box)
  • Cardboard boxes or general household garbage

By properly disposing of hazardous materials, you help prevent harmful chemicals from entering our soil and water. Together, we can keep Saugeen First Nation clean, healthy, and safe for future generations.
