Summary of SON Report on Métis Nation of Ontario Claims
The Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, collectively referred to as Saugeen Ojibway Nation, or SON, commissioned historians Dr. Heidi Bohaker and Dr. Chandra Murdoch to prepare a report assessing the historic claims made in SON Territory by the Métis Nation of Ontario through the group that they call the Georgian Bay Métis Community (“the Report”). The Métis Nation of Ontario claims that there was a distinct historic Métis community in the area around Owen Sound, which they refer to as the Georgian Bay Historic Métis Community. Based on the evidence, the Report concludes that there was no evidence of distinct community anywhere in SON’s Territory that would meet the criteria for a “distinct
Métis community” capable of holding s. 35 rights.
